Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti 2024 or Shivaji Jayanti is celebrated in Maharashtra, and it is the birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj, the creator of Maratha Empire, which is celebrated throughout Maharashtra and is also a government holiday.

According to the Gregorian calendar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti or Shiv Jayanti is celebrated every year on 19 February, whereas according to Hindu Date, it is different every year. This year, India celebrates the 394th birth anniversary of the great Maratha ruler.


Shivaji Maharaj’s real name was Shivaji Bhosale, and he belonged to the Bhonsle Maratha clan. According to Marathi Shalivahana, he was born in Shivseri Qila in Krishna Paksha 3 of Hindu panchang Falgun in 1630. He was a great Maratha ruler who created a separate territory from the Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur, which is considered the beginning of the Maratha Empire.

At the age of 16, Shivaji Maharaj captured Torna Fort, according to historical records, while Raigad and Kondana Fort were captured a year later. He is also credited with establishing Hindavi Swarajya.

The first to celebrate this festival was the Maratha ruler Mahatma Phule in Pune in 1870. The Bal Gangadhar Tilak will be used during these festivals. This freedom fighter brought the contribution of Shivaji Maharaj into limelight and exposed his image to the people.


Shivaji Jayanti is a Maharashtrian festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion throughout the state. Shivaji Maharaj is remembered today for his courage and bravery. On this day, the Sanskritic heritage of the Marathas is awakened through different events and dramas.

Shivneri Qila, the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Maratha Empire, is located near Junnar in Pune, Maharashtra. The fort was earlier used to secure the trade route from the country to Kalyan. Shivneri got its name during the reign of Yadavas of Devagiri. Ahmadnagar Sultan Bahadur Nizam Shah gave Shivneri and Chakan to Shivaji Maharaj and the grandfather of the Maratha chief. There is a small temple in the name of Shivaji in Shivneri Fort which is dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi, who was named after Shivaji.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj developed this fort and made Raigad his capital. To reach the fort one has to climb 1,700 steps from the coal. Rajyabhishekh of Shivaji Maharaj took place here. A statue of Shivaji is also installed here.

Shivaji Maharaj built Sindhudurg in 1664, which strengthened the presence of Marathaon in the Arabian Sea. The fort is situated near Malvan Beach of Konkan. This fort is spread over 47 acres and is the largest sea in the world. There is also a temple dedicated to Shivaji in the fort.

Here a great battle took place between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan. Shivaji Maharaj built this fort in 1656. That’s why the highest sea is 3,543 feet above the star.

This was the hardest hit by the Mughals; During the war, the brave Maratha soldier – Tanaji Malusare – laid down his life. The fort is one of the most interesting stories of the Marathas. Initially, this stone was called Kondana but later it was named Sinhagad. Shivaji Maharaj’s famous words “Gad Aala Pan Singh Gela (We captured everything, but lost our lion warrior)” have been quoted since.

Torna Fort, a great fort in Maharashtra, will remain the most ancient because it was captured by Shivaji I in 1646 at the age of 16. This was also one of the few miles of the marathon. Near the entrance of Torna Fort, there is Menghai Devi temple, which is also known as Tornaji temple.
